Non-birthday updates!

We leave tomorrow for a little Tangly Woods' pod getaway, so time to update this scrapbook before we create some additional memories! The big news connected to our middle gal turning 11 is coming soon. Here's all the less monumental updates!

The first chicks of the season have arrived and they are a spunky first hatch! By the end of each chick hatching season we don't all flock to see every new brood, but this first one is always special! None ended up sharing Alida's birthday as the hatch went quickly and concluded on her birthday eve. There is lots of chick adoring and cuddling happening and their little peeps are a pretty constant (pleasant) background noise.
They still do not really compare to holding Luca though. These pictures don't tell the whole truth. I can't lie - I do also get turns. But they don't often get photographed. I am hoping to sneak a little visit all by myself tomorrow morning!
There's a lot of hatching, changing, and growing up happening around here! Terah took a tumble into the swimming pool where the chicks reside the other night and gave one of her loose middle teeth a little help towards coming out! It was just a little tug from me the next morning and out it popped on Alida's birthday. It even got a bow on it and was given to Alida, who did not seem too impressed with that particular present. So Terah got the $1 from the tooth fairy. The other top middle one is not far behind.
After a long hiatus, we were finally able to find a time for Jason and Kali to donate blood together! I'm hoping I'll be able to get back into it before too long (still trying to get to the bottom of daily headaches currently).
Garden work has slowed in recent days as birthday celebrations ramped up. But in the flurry earlier this week, a lot of turnips were harvested, ground prepared for onions and shallots, and we had a very successful and fun day weeding the garlic patch, applying compost, and putting leaves in the paths. I could almost sense the little plants smiling in their own plantlike way!
The forsythia is in its prime. We have probably enjoyed the last of its gorgeous bright yellow blooms. With temperatures in the teens tonight and tomorrow night, some of the spring flowers and flowering trees are likely to be hit hard. We'll be back to about 70 degrees in a few days...
